2008 In Music
As you may/not know I recently posted my top ten albums of the year. These were albums that were caught my ear and really impressed me. 2008 really was a great year as far as new releases and it was hard to condense them down to my 10 favorites. However, I feel I did a good job picking out my top ten. I do feel bad leaving so many great records without mention. Since I was just called out of work, (grumble), I will take this time to attempt to categorize most of the albums I listened to this year.

Top Ten:
1. Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound
2. Protest the Hero - Fortress
3. The Matches - A Band in Hope
4. Immortal Technique - The 3rd World
5. Chuck Ragan/Austin Lucas - Bristle Ridge
6. The Riot Before - Fists Buried in Pockets
7. Ours - Mercy
8. The Briggs - Come All You Madmen
9. Panic! at the Disco - Pretty. Odd
10. Metallica - Death Magnetic

Honorable Mention:
The albums that were good, but not quite as good as the best. They are still worth checking out, they just didn't wow me as much as others. There is no particular order for these.

- Nas - Untitled
- Valient Thorr - Immortalizer
- Less Than Jake - GNV FLA
- mc Chris - mc Chris is Dead
- The Bronx - S/T III
- Everybody Out! - S/T
- Flight of the Conchords - S/T
- V/A - All Aboard: A Tribute to Johnny Cash
- The Loved Ones - Build and Burn
- Flogging Molly - Float
- Goldfinger - Hello Destiny
- Food for Animals - Belly
- The Living End - White Noise
- Murder by Death - Red of Tooth and Claw
- The Street Dogs - State of Grace
- These Arms are Snakes - Tail Swallower and the Dove
- The Tossers - On a Fine Spring Evening
- Of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping
- Pennywise - Reason to Believe
- Shearwater - Rook
- InnerPartySystem - S/T

Breakout Albums:
Here are the records of bands from people who used to be in other bands. Most of them do a nice job of distancing themselves from previous efforts. For the most part, i ranked these based on what I liked from each album and my expectations for whats to come.

1. The Casting Out - Go Crazy, Throw Fireworks (Boy Sets Fire)
2. The Action Design - Never Say (Tsunami Bomb, Pipedown)
3. United Nations - S/T (Thursday, Glassjaw)
4. Deadly Sins - Selling Our Weakness (Crash and Burn)
5. Warship - Supply and Demand (From Autumn to Ashes)
6. LaGrecia - On Parallels (Kid Dynamite, None More Black)
7. Jaguar Love - Take Me to the Sea (Blood Brothers, Pretty Girls Make Graves)

EPs:
I didn't pick many of these up this year, but there are a few that I feel deserve to be mentioned.

1. Dead to Me - Little Brother
2. Thursday/Envy - Split
3. Murder By Death/William Elliot Whitmore - Split
4. Tom Gabel - Anna Was A Stool Pigeon

Re-Releases:
A couple of bands took this year to re-release their albums with a plethora of extras including live DVDs, bonus tracks, posters, etc.

1. Bad Religion - New Maps of Hell
2. Billy Joel - The Stranger
3. Dropkick Murphys - The Meanest of Times

Live Albums/DVDs:
I picked up a few live records this year. I like live releases because if done right, they accurately capture the experience of seeing a band and are a real treat. In recent years, I have noticed that sound quality for live albums has only gotten better. For the most part, 2008 was a successful year for live records.

1. Colin Meloy - Sings Live
2. Paramore - The Final Riot
3. Good Riddance - Remain in Memory
4. The Tossers - Gloatin' and Showboatin'
5. My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade is Dead
6. Thrice - Live from the House of Blues
7. Avenged Sevenfold - Live from Long Beach

Biggest Disappointments:
As good as 2008 was in music, there were some stinkers. These albums aren't all necessarily bad, but they just failed to deliver. Some bands just rehashed the same thing they have for years and this year, I was just sick of it. Most of them aren't even worth downloading. I don't see any reason to rank these, just avoid them.

- AC/DC - Black Ice
- Dillinger 4 - Civil War
- The Offspring - Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace
- Rise Against - Appeal to Reason
- The Slackers - Self-Medication
- Star Fucking Hipsters - Until We're Dead
- Anti-Flag - The Bright Lights of America
- Alkaline Trio - Agony and Irony
- Born to Lose - Saints Gone Wrong
- Fall Out Boy - Folie a Deux
- Millencollin - Machine 15

There you have it. A much more elaborate list of what I thought of 2008's music. There were plenty of other records I picked up this year, but they just didn't stand out enough. I'm disappointed that I've yet to hear the International Noise Conspiracy's new album, but its not on the internet and I can't afford to buy it. I don't expect it to break onto the top 10 list, so I won't worry about it. I have no idea what's coming out in 2009 besides new Thursday, Propagandhi, and Social Distortion albums. Here's hoping 2009 rocks just as hard.
